Kuwait at a glance

A small country with a long horizon

At the head of the Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Kuwait grew from a merchant port of pearl divers, boat builders and caravan traders into one of the wealthiest nations on earth after oil was discovered in 1938.

That double heritage is what makes it rewarding to visit: Bedouin weaving and Gulf seafaring alongside a skyline of record-breaking towers, a new cultural district of museums and an opera house, and a coastline of beaches and islands — all within an hour’s drive.

Made by the sea

Before oil, there were pearls

For two centuries Kuwait lived from the sea. Each summer the pearling fleet sailed for months to the oyster banks of the Gulf, while ocean-going dhows built on Kuwait’s beaches carried dates, timber and spices between Basra, India and East Africa.

The songs, the diwaniya gatherings and the boat-building skills of that era still shape Kuwaiti identity today — and you can still see the wooden dhows in the harbours.
