The Red Fort, Mutla Ridge and the winter camps
West of the bay, the old oasis town of Jahra guards the road into the desert: visit its restored Red Fort, look out from Mutla Ridge and, in winter, join Kuwaitis at their desert camps.
Jahra lies about 32 km west of central Kuwait City, at the western end of Kuwait Bay. For centuries its wells and farms made it the last green stop before the open desert, and it is still known for its farms today.
Its landmark is the mud-brick Red Fort (Al-Qasr Al-Ahmar), built in 1897 and the scene of the Battle of Jahra in October 1920. After years of closure it reopened in 2025 following restoration.
North of town the land rises to Mutla Ridge, the most prominent hill in Kuwait at about 142 m. In the cool season — officially from mid-November to mid-March — the desert around the ridge and further north fills with family camps, a tradition Kuwaitis call kashta.
