The causeway & wild coast
Across the bay on one of the world’s longest bridges
Since 2019 the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway has carried drivers 36 km across Kuwait Bay to Subiya, opening up the quiet north: mudflats rich in birdlife, desert reserves and Bubiyan, Kuwait’s largest island.
The causeway’s Main Link runs 36.14 km from Shuwaikh to Subiya, passing two artificial islands; with its separate Doha Link the project totals 48.5 km. The drive itself, low over the water with the city skyline behind you, is one of the most striking in the Gulf.
The northern shore of Kuwait Bay is a landscape of tidal mudflats and salt marsh, important for wading birds in winter. Inland, the Sabah Al-Ahmad Natural Reserve protects a large area of desert where native plants and wildlife are being restored; visits are by arrangement only.
Bubiyan, at 863 km² the largest of Kuwait’s islands, lies in the far north-east near the Shatt al-Arab delta and is mostly closed to the public.
