Lagoons & coral islands
Weekend chalets, waterways and Kubbar’s reefs
Near the Saudi border, Kuwait’s south coast is where residents go for the weekend: the man-made lagoons of Khiran, beach chalets, boat trips to the coral island of Kubbar and the farms of Wafra.
About 100 km south of Kuwait City, the Khiran area has been transformed by Sabah Al-Ahmad Sea City, a development of waterways and lagoons cut into the coast, lined with homes and chalets. Al Khiran Mall and its waterfront serve visitors on weekends.
Offshore lie Kuwait’s small southern islands. Kubbar, about 30 km out to sea, is a sandy, nearly circular island fringed by coral reefs — a protected area that is popular for snorkelling and diving trips by private boat.
Inland, Wafra near the Saudi border is Kuwait’s main farming area, where you can see how vegetables are grown in one of the world’s hottest climates.
