About 30 km off the coast, the tiny sandy island of Kubbar is ringed by coral reefs — a protected area and Kuwait’s favourite destination for snorkelling and diving by boat.
Kubbar is nearly circular, only about 370–380 metres across, and covered with low shrubs. It lies roughly 30 km off Kuwait’s southern coast and 29 km from Failaka.
Its fringing reefs, among the northernmost coral reefs in the world, attract colourful reef fish, turtles and seabirds. The island is a protected area under the Environment Public Authority, and visits are made by private boat or with licensed dive operators.
Good to know
- Never anchor on coral, touch reefs or leave rubbish; follow the Environment Public Authority’s rules for the reserve.
- Sea conditions change quickly — go with an experienced captain and check the marine forecast.
