Oil heritage & fish markets
Where Kuwait’s oil story began
South of the capital, the garden town of Ahmadi was founded in 1946 for the oil industry; its exhibition tells how oil changed Kuwait. On the coast, Fahaheel has a working fish market and a waterfront mall.
Kuwait’s first commercial oil was struck at the Burgan field in 1938 — today part of the second-largest oil field in the world. The Kuwait Oil Company built Ahmadi as its headquarters town in 1946, with leafy streets that still feel different from the rest of the country.
Its Ahmad Al-Jaber Oil & Gas Exhibition explains, with models and interactive displays, how oil is found, produced and exported — and how it transformed a pearling and trading society in a single generation.
On the coast, Fahaheel’s fish market is supplied directly from the boats tied up alongside, and the shrimp season brings crowds from late summer. Nearby, in Qurain, the Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum preserves a house where Kuwaiti resistance fighters fought in February 1991.
