East of the capital, Salmiya is Kuwait’s busiest seafront: beaches, cafés and the Marina along Arabian Gulf Street, the Scientific Center’s aquarium and, inland, some of the country’s most rewarding small museums.
Salmiya sits on a cape at the eastern end of the Kuwait City coastline. Its seafront is the place to join residents for an evening walk, a coffee or a swim — the promenade runs past the Marina Crescent, small public beaches and the headland of Ras Al-Ardh, from where ferries leave for Failaka Island.
Inland, Hawalli and its neighbouring districts hold two very different treasures: Bait Al-Othman, a heritage museum about life in Kuwait before and after oil, and the Tareq Rajab Museum in Jabriya, a family collection of Islamic art, manuscripts and jewellery assembled over half a century.
Families head to the Scientific Center at the tip of the peninsula, with its aquarium, IMAX theatre and harbour of historic dhows.
