At the tip of the Salmiya peninsula, the Scientific Center combines a large aquarium, a hands-on Discovery Place and an IMAX theatre, with a harbour of historic pearling boats outside.
Opened in April 2000 by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, the centre was the first of its kind in the region. Its aquarium takes visitors from the intertidal mudflats of Kuwait Bay to the coral reefs and open sea, with sharks, rays and more than a hundred species.
Discovery Place offers interactive science exhibits for children, and the IMAX theatre — the first in the Middle East — shows documentaries on a giant screen.
Outside, wooden dhows used for pearl diving and trade are moored in a recreated old-style harbour, a reminder of how Kuwait lived before oil.
Good to know
- A good choice for hot afternoons; buy combined tickets if you plan to see the aquarium and an IMAX film.
