Opened in 1986 opposite Seif Palace, the Grand Mosque is the largest in Kuwait — a calm, light-filled space that has long welcomed visitors of all faiths on guided tours.
Designed by the Iraqi architect Mohammed Makiya, the Grand Mosque covers 45,000 m², of which the building itself occupies 20,000 m². The main prayer hall measures 72 metres on every side; it is entered through teak doors and lit by 144 windows.
Quranic calligraphy, carved wood and filtered daylight give the hall a quiet grandeur, while its courtyards and arcades are designed for the vast congregations of Ramadan nights and the Eid prayers.
Outside prayer times, the mosque has offered guided visits that introduce Islamic art, architecture and practice to non-Muslim visitors. Tour arrangements change, so confirm current times before you go.
Good to know
- Dress modestly: long sleeves and long trousers or skirts. Women are asked to cover their hair; abayas and scarves are usually available.
- Avoid prayer times and Friday midday; mornings are generally best for visits.
- Shoes are removed before entering the prayer hall.
