On the Sharq waterfront, a shopping centre with its own marina stands beside Kuwait City’s main fish market and a harbour of wooden dhows — come in the morning, when the catch is sold.
Souq Sharq opened in 1998 as a waterfront market and marina. Its liveliest corner is next door: the fish market, where traders sell zubaidi (silver pomfret), hamour (grouper), sobaity (sea bream) and Gulf shrimp brought in by local boats.
Walk along the quay to see the traditional wooden boats moored in the harbour, then continue east along the seafront promenade towards the Kuwait Towers.
Good to know
- Mornings are the best time for the fish market; the shopping centre stays open into the evening.
- Zubaidi is most prized in summer and early autumn; shrimp are at their best in the season that starts in late summer.
